Initiative

http://www.creatingcommunicators.net/

I love people who show initiative and go the extra mile!

Did you notice that so many people are just doing the bare minimum to get by? I especially notice this in the work place. People only doing what they have been asked and not going that extra mile.   And you know who suffers? Everyone! Your co workers, your clients and even you!

First let me tell you why I used this picture! I have an aide at a school who made this to house all of her materials! She went the extra mile to keep her work site neat, tidy and easy to use for herself and her clients! Great job Michelle!! LOVE IT!
Let me tell you why its good to show some initiative and go the extra mile...

1. Your clients! They can see when you are doing a good job and are showing some passion for what you do! If you portray enthusiasm and passion for what you are doing (when working with clients) your clients will do better and make more progress! They will also be happier to come and see you because it will be more fun! It is a lot easier to work with kids who are happy, having fun and excited to see you!

2. Your coworkers! When you work hard and go the extra mile it can set a precedence in your office or setting. Other people will see that you are doing things that you haven't been asked to do and do it happily. They will then start going above and beyond for your employer and clients! You know the old saying, one bad apple can spoil the bunch...? It is definitely true of lazy co-workers and bad attitudes! I have worked with people who rarely do their share of the workload and it goes unnoticed by employers. FRUSTRATING! But you know who always notices? The clients! And guess who they tell? Your employer! So just do a little bit extra... it will come back to you like a slingshot! I always think, if I was receiving this service what would I want? Then I do that. And you feel better knowing you have done a good job, regardless of what others around have (or have not) done. You have to live with your conscience :)

3. YOU! You, again, feel better knowing you have done a good job! You have the satisfaction of doing something altruistic- the right thing just for the sake of doing the right thing!

Altruism or selflessness is the principle or practice of concern for the welfare of others. It is a traditional virtue in many cultures and a core aspect of various religious traditions and secular worldviews, though the concept of "others" toward whom concern should be directed can vary among cultures and religions.

This is how I try to run my business, Creating Communicators. I have re-vamped services to meet needs of schools and varying budgets. I am providing services to areas who have been unable to afford services in the past or are so far away professionals have been unwilling to come to their site!

What can you do today that is going the extra mile for your clients?

Have a great day, sincerely!
Cheers,
Mindy

Motivation and Initiative

I am working with a speech aide who is brand new to the speech world! I have been training her for
a couple of months and on one of my visits I came back to this. She took it upon herself to
decorate and find some speech resources to decorate her room and to
provide support to her and her kiddos.
I was so happy that she was willing to take upon herself and showed the initiative to do this. I have been to schools, sadly enough, who have had staff who haven't even touched my resources!
This was a pleasant surprise!
Thank you Michelle!
You Rock!!!

September

Well September has began and so has school. My kids are small- I have a grade 1 and a veteran grade 3er! Ty is grade 3 and not a huge fan of school, Lainy my big grade one keener is wondering why they aren't reading yet! So funny how you can have 2 kids who are so different!

During the summer I made a kindergarten activity with center's for every month. Each month I have targeted areas that seem to be big areas of need in the speech world.
I am going to give you my activities- one by one, month by month! Please keep an eye out for them!

Become a regular follower! The first month targets concepts and position words.
If you can't wait check it out in my store:

Does technology make your baby smarter?

In short no!
"Everything we know about brain research and child development points away from using screens to educate babies," said Susan Linn, the group's director. "The research shows that machines and screen media are a really ineffective way of teaching a baby language. What babies need for healthy brain development is active play, hands-on creative play and face-to-face" interaction.

Written by Anne Flaherty - The Associated Press.

After School Group- Reading to kids and having a discussion about the book!

If you want your child to interact and use good communication skills you need to communicate with your child. There is no iPhone app that will make your baby speak. Screen time will not guarantee your child's language skills, IQ, or academic success. Yes there are many apps that claim to improve communication, however; you need to interact and speak with your child while using them. It is like finger nails on a chalk board for me when I see babies with TV's in their room or a 2 year old with an iPhone playing games!

You need to talk, sing, read books and interact to get the language going with your children!

Preschool children :
  • 3 & 4 year old's learn best when they are moving. Adults learn best when sitting down and concentrating. This is NOT true for children. If they want to stand, walk, jump, play with a fidget toy, make crafts, listen to stories, and/or sing, let them.

Kids learn best through playing– let kids be kids!
The more senses they use the more they will learn and retain the information. A 3 year old child should not be expected to sit down and be quiet for long periods of time.
  • Your 3 year old…
will say 3 to 4 words together - I want juice. Follows 3-part directions, like get the doll, feed it, and put it to bed. Understands and asks questions, like Where is the toy?
Describes activities, feelings and problems, and tells simple stories.
  • Your 4 year old…
Uses sentences that are longer and more complete, such as “I want to go to the park.”
Uses more grammar, like pronouns (I, you, me, she, he, we), past tense (walked), and some question words (what, who, where, why). However there may still be some errors.
Most 4 year old's do not know how to share. It is a skill they are still learning– please be patient.
Articulation
  • Your 3 year old…
    Uses sounds like m, p, b, w, t, d, n, h, k, g, f, s, vowels, y as in yes, and ing as in sing.
Is understood by parents between 75 to 100% of the time.

  • Your 4 year old…
    Uses sounds like m, p, b, w, t, d, n, h, k, g, f, y, l, s, z, vowels, and ing.
Is understood by parents 100% of the time.
  • Your 5 year old…
Says most sounds correctly except for maybe r, v, ch, and th.
Uses l blends and s blends, such as blue and stop.
May say s, z, sh, ch, or j with the tongue sticking out (a lisp).
Is easily understood by siblings, friends, parents, and strangers.
  •  Modeling correct speech and grammar is great tool parents can use when speaking with their kids!

City, City What Do You See?

Sooo many kids I work with have to work on the vocabulary goal these days; so I started looking for resources. I have a hard time finding resources that work well for younger kids at the beginning of the goal. Normally when I start targeting the vocabulary goal, I start with an associations activity. I will have the children state which items go together, and then explain why they go together?

However when I am working with preschoolers or children who have significant language delays,  this can be a very difficult task for them. This got me thinking..... What do I need? I started making books based on themes: farm animals, things at school, ocean items, and things in the city. I wrote these books in an easy, repetitions pattern so that children could read them along with their teacher or SLP. They are written in the Brown Bear, Brown Bear format so that non-readers and beginning readers can read them again, and again.  These books are just a beginning point for you to say all of these items in the book belong to a category- the category name is.....  Then you can go on to tell the kids what are some similarities between the items and what are some differences,  what are the parts, where do the items come from, what is their function, etc.

Here is a copy of my City, City what do you see which includes many services that are found in our communities.
