March is on its way....

Hey Everyone!

March is on its way.... Yahoo! To me, that only means one thing, spring!
 I am so excited!
Check out my facebook page!!!

Have you ever wondered what parents are doing at home to increase the language skills of their children? I do. I know that before I was in the speech world I had no clue what to do to get language going or what to do to promote children's language skills. I see many kids who are unaware or unclear of speech and language is and h ow they can help at home. I decided to help parents out by giving them easy, free, quick activities.  I send this calendar home with my speech "kids" every month. These free calendars are also an easy alternative to speech homework. Especially for the kids who never seem to get their homework completed. When I  made the calendars i wanted them to be used by parents to target many language goals, easily, all month long. The calendars target skills all children need to have! They only take a few minutes a day- some of the activities can even be do in the car for those of us who are really pressed for time!
Download it here and here!

I also want to put  a little shout out to all of you educators, teachers, daycare workers, speech aides, and SLP’s- Thank you for doing what you do and caring about our children! You are all wonderful!!

Take care!
Cheers,
Mindy

October Calendar of Events-freebie

Welcome October!
It can be difficult to think of enriching activities to do with our children, especially with our busy lives! I love my kids, but I need to remember that I need to have time for myself too! I love it when I can do something with them that is going to stimulate their mind, be great for our relationship and isn't going to be expensive or time consuming. That is why I have come up with a language calendar for this month. It targets some of the areas that seem to be a  concern in our neck of the woods with a majority of our children we serve.

All I ask that is if you love it, follow my store
or my shop and give it a rating.

I hope you all get to spend a fun filled weekend with your loved ones, and cherish each moment!
Have a great weekend!
Cheers,
Mindy

Why aren't they talking?

Many people believe that to teach children language skills  you need to sit down and get out the flashcards! Nothing could be farther from the truth. Anything you do during the day, including routine activities, can be an opportunity to provide a language rich environment for your child.
graphics by: my cute graphics.

Use bath time as a time to talk with your:
Baby
· talk about anything
· Label body parts
· Label items in and around the bathroom
· Follow what your baby’s interested in– play with what they like to play with.
Toddler
· Use short phrases  2-3 words.
· Use on, off, two, feet, hands, colors, and describing words—wet, dry, in, out, etc.
· Repeat the same words at least 5 times.
Preschooler
· Label sequences; first we put the water in the bath tub then we get in, etc.
· Ask open ended questions– not yes no questions. This will help to keep the conversation going!

The first step to improving your child’s language skills is to observe them! Watch what they like to do and what interests them. Which toys, books and activities they play with the most and then talk about those items.

The second step is to Wait!
When they are talking don’t interrupt them and when you are waiting for a response– wait at least 5-10 seconds.
They may seem like very simple, easy skills but when you focus on them you realize how much you actually don’t use these techniques!

Have fun!

City, City What Do You See?

Sooo many kids I work with have to work on the vocabulary goal these days; so I started looking for resources. I have a hard time finding resources that work well for younger kids at the beginning of the goal. Normally when I start targeting the vocabulary goal, I start with an associations activity. I will have the children state which items go together, and then explain why they go together?

However when I am working with preschoolers or children who have significant language delays,  this can be a very difficult task for them. This got me thinking..... What do I need? I started making books based on themes: farm animals, things at school, ocean items, and things in the city. I wrote these books in an easy, repetitions pattern so that children could read them along with their teacher or SLP. They are written in the Brown Bear, Brown Bear format so that non-readers and beginning readers can read them again, and again.  These books are just a beginning point for you to say all of these items in the book belong to a category- the category name is.....  Then you can go on to tell the kids what are some similarities between the items and what are some differences,  what are the parts, where do the items come from, what is their function, etc.

Here is a copy of my City, City what do you see which includes many services that are found in our communities.

What do I do about Speech and Language over the summer?

I know we are waiting for the end of the school year, but.... Over the summer your child may not be receiving services, especially if services are directed through the school. I have made a calendar of activities that are good from preschoolers up to grade 3. If your child is older, just up the anti! Make the questions a little more difficult and expect a little more from them! Happy Summer!
