Before & After

Hey Everyone!!!

A lot of kiddos have trouble with before and after - either the position concept or the time concept. When I work on this concept I start by working on the position concept. It is easier for the little guys to understand. I line up little manipulatives (there are some great items from Lakeshore Learning) and then ask the child to put an item before another. I teach that before means in front and after means behind. I don't move on to after until I am sure they have mastered before.

After they have learned and understood the concept in positions then I move on to time. I give directions like touch the pig but before you do that touch the cow. I will show that that I physically have touched the cow before the pig. As they have mastered this I give instructions like touch the cow before the pig. And then I move on to after.

There are so many items you can use to teach before and after. I really like the app Easy Concepts which you can target just before or after or both of them together. Check it out- it's only $4.99 from Easy Speak Enterprises.

Cheers,
Mindy

September

Well September has began and so has school. My kids are small- I have a grade 1 and a veteran grade 3er! Ty is grade 3 and not a huge fan of school, Lainy my big grade one keener is wondering why they aren't reading yet! So funny how you can have 2 kids who are so different!

During the summer I made a kindergarten activity with center's for every month. Each month I have targeted areas that seem to be big areas of need in the speech world.
I am going to give you my activities- one by one, month by month! Please keep an eye out for them!

Become a regular follower! The first month targets concepts and position words.
If you can't wait check it out in my store:
or in my shop:

Does technology make your baby smarter?

In short no!
"Everything we know about brain research and child development points away from using screens to educate babies," said Susan Linn, the group's director. "The research shows that machines and screen media are a really ineffective way of teaching a baby language. What babies need for healthy brain development is active play, hands-on creative play and face-to-face" interaction.

Written by Anne Flaherty - The Associated Press.

After School Group- Reading to kids and having a discussion about the book!

If you want your child to interact and use good communication skills you need to communicate with your child. There is no iPhone app that will make your baby speak. Screen time will not guarantee your child's language skills, IQ, or academic success. Yes there are many apps that claim to improve communication, however; you need to interact and speak with your child while using them. It is like finger nails on a chalk board for me when I see babies with TV's in their room or a 2 year old with an iPhone playing games!

You need to talk, sing, read books and interact to get the language going with your children!

Preschool children :
  • 3 & 4 year old's learn best when they are moving. Adults learn best when sitting down and concentrating. This is NOT true for children. If they want to stand, walk, jump, play with a fidget toy, make crafts, listen to stories, and/or sing, let them.

Kids learn best through playing– let kids be kids!
The more senses they use the more they will learn and retain the information. A 3 year old child should not be expected to sit down and be quiet for long periods of time.
  • Your 3 year old…
will say 3 to 4 words together - I want juice. Follows 3-part directions, like get the doll, feed it, and put it to bed. Understands and asks questions, like Where is the toy?
Describes activities, feelings and problems, and tells simple stories.
  • Your 4 year old…
Uses sentences that are longer and more complete, such as “I want to go to the park.”
Uses more grammar, like pronouns (I, you, me, she, he, we), past tense (walked), and some question words (what, who, where, why). However there may still be some errors.
Most 4 year old's do not know how to share. It is a skill they are still learning– please be patient.
Articulation
  • Your 3 year old…
    Uses sounds like m, p, b, w, t, d, n, h, k, g, f, s, vowels, y as in yes, and ing as in sing.
Is understood by parents between 75 to 100% of the time.

  • Your 4 year old…
    Uses sounds like m, p, b, w, t, d, n, h, k, g, f, y, l, s, z, vowels, and ing.
Is understood by parents 100% of the time.
  • Your 5 year old…
Says most sounds correctly except for maybe r, v, ch, and th.
Uses l blends and s blends, such as blue and stop.
May say s, z, sh, ch, or j with the tongue sticking out (a lisp).
Is easily understood by siblings, friends, parents, and strangers.
  •  Modeling correct speech and grammar is great tool parents can use when speaking with their kids!

Educate parents & staff

Speech pathologists are very important, but let's face it, so are parents. Most parents believe that speech is just sounds and they forget about the language component.
We need to educate parents and staff members (daycare staff, preschool staff, and aides) on how to provide a language rich environment.
Check out my PowerPoint that is user friendly for everyone about the basics of a language rich environment and how to be a good communicative partner for your children.
