Associations
Associations
Here is a great activity to teach associations. You can have the children use playdoh to cover up the 2 items that go together, or the item doesn't belong with playdoh! Great idea to keep little hands busy and promote vocabulary. Printer-friendly- uses less ink!
***The answers are not included. You can use your professional judgement to decide if the answer is appropriate or not. For example, there is shampoo, a hat and soap. The child could answer that soap and shampoo are both items that wash, or they could say shampoo and a hat are both used on your hair/head. Some mats have apparent answers, and others are more complicated.
There are colour and black and white copies which you can send home for extra practice at home.
Note ** there are some variations between the coloured and black and white version simply due to the clip art I have :)

Association Match Ups!
You can use these mats as a fun way to improve vocabulary in the classroom as a center or as a simple and fun activity in Speech Therapy!
Print, Laminate and cut only cut apart pages 3 and 9 leave the other pages as mats! If you have time (and energy!), you can use velcro too!
Use the mats for a center activity and put all of the pieces (pages 3 & 9) in the middle of the table.
Have the students choose the correct pieces for their mats and explain why they go together. For some of the questions there is more than one correct answer- accept any answer as long as they can properly justify it.
**There is 1 picture that includes a Canadian twenty dollar bill, Canadian quarter and penny. Although they are the Canadian version, they are still applicable for Americans as the bill is green. :)

Match It!!
If you are anything like me, by May you are in need of some new stuff for your little guys. They get tired of the same old stuff... quick. :) So I started making something...
Here is my relatively new Associations Mats- Match It Pack.
Use these mats as a fun way to improve vocabulary in the classroom as a center or as a simple, and fun activity in Speech Therapy!

I also want to use these mats with little manipulatives - like little toys from the $ store. They would be so good for pre-k kids- engaging and hands on!! Thesis will love it. And if you want to talk RTI - it would be a good center to give to your pre-k or kindergarten room(s). I'm still working on those mats but keep an eye out cause I will get them added soon...

This Goes With That?
I haven't talked to you in a while, I hope your May is buzzing along!
By the end of the school year I am tired of my resources so I go on the search for something new. I recently purchased this from Really Good Stuff. It's called This goes with that. It's a new way of targeting vocabulary (associations) and it works well with older kids.
It gives the kids an opportunity to write and draw how items go together.
This is a good activity for a center or groups to work on while you are providing some one on one. This activity provides 1main picture and then a choice of 3 at the bottom. The student picks a colored circle (they come the game and they are made of cardboard) and they match it the item that's associated and explain why they are related.
Love it!! Easy Peasy!!
Check out Really Good Stuff- and it's cheap!!!

Match it! An Associations Game
I made a new product and you know how I love associations!
Its that time of year when I am starting to get tired of the same old stuff... I've spent a small fortune on TPT! :)
You print it off, laminate and then cut out the pieces but leave the mats as entire pages.
If you have nothing but time and money you can use velcro too! That will make it easier to keep it together and hopefully you won't misplace the pieces.

I made this and if you grab it quick you can get it for free!
Please leave me some feedback!!
Have a great day!

Associations & Play-doh!
I love providing therapy to
my younger kiddies! Since they are about 4 years old, I need to have fun and
engaging activities! I'm really glad that play-doh is so fun for the little
guys, plus it keeps those little hands busy. I have started working on product
specifically for play-doh and I am now making more-
keep your eye out for them. Take a look at them now- while they are only $1!!!!
I made these sheets so you
can use them 2 different ways.
1. You can have the
students cover up the item that goes with the main item and explain how they go
together. For example- in the first picture above the child would cover up the
watch and explain that a watch and clock go together because they both
tell time.
2. The other way (the way I
used it in the picture) is the kiddie covers up the item that doesn't belong
(which is how you phrase the questions: which one doesn't belong?) and then
explain that it doesn't go because it's not something that helps you tell time.
This way can be confusing for the younger guys so be careful how you word your
question and remember to be consistent. ;)
The best thing about these
are that I didn't even have to laminate them- I just used page protectors! I
STILL haven't bought my laminator yet! A definite necessity in the speech
world! I also made them in black and white so you can use a bingo dabber if you choose. :)
Keep an eye out for a
similar product where we target categories!!!
How you do work on
associations?

What Goes Together?
I just recently purchased a neat item from Lakeshore Learning. I totally love it!
It's called the Early Language Concept Kit- What Goes Together?

I love it because its something different and new (so do the kids)! I also used it to tackle more than just the vocabulary goal.
Here are some ideas I have of how to use it!
Phonological Awareness- have the kids choose an item out of the bag and then tell the beginning and ending sounds and then have them segment the word into all of its sounds. b-a-t.
Phonemic Awareness
* You have them come up with a word that rhymes with the item
* have the kids clap out the syllables of the word.
Language
*Verb tenses. I would use an action word and have them come up with the present, past and future tense. For example I would say z mouse eats cheese.
Now he is......, yesterday he....tomorrow he......?
*Formulating sentences- choose an item out of the bag and have the child use that word in a sentence.
*Wh Questions- have the child choose an item from the bag and you ask a question. Where does it live, where do you find it, what do you do with it...etc.
*Plurals- have them choose an item and then name the plural of that item. 1 mouse or 2 mice.
*vocabulary- find a few "like" items and have the child name the category or attributes of the category. For example the car and the train are both vehicles/transportation or the flippers and the fish are both things that go in water.
*Associations- and finally the intention it was used for. I have the kids match up the items and then have them explain why they go together. A mouse and cheese go together because mice eat cheese.

Some of my faves!
Hello fellow Speechies!
I have many kids who seem to work on associations. I love to work on associations. When you look around there are so many resources to use. Some free, some you need to buy. I am going to post some of the things I like to use.
1. My board maker book
I have had this so long I can't remember who made it. It is a book with consisting of 3 pictures. 1 on the top and 2 smaller pictures below it. The kids choose one of the small ones to go with the large main picture and then they explain why it goes together. This is my fave- sorry it's upside down. With a little imagination you can make your own. When I get my butt I gear I will make a master and put it in my store. ;) Please, be patient.
2. This is another activity I like. This is especially good for younger kids to introduce the goal. At this point I usually get the kids to match the items and then I will give a brief explanation as to why the items are associated. This one is free!

I see that this product did receive some negative feedback- in my opinion the feedback was more about ink than the quality of the item. Judge for yourself.
3. Camp Go Togethers
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Camp-Go-Together-Association-and-Analogies-567035
This is a great activity for older kids because this activity involves reading and it gives clues about why items can be related.
4. Who does not belong? Another great one to have the kiddies choose which item does not belong. I like it, simple, and clear!

5. Last but not least! I love this item even though it is a Halloween/candy theme. It has 3 related items and the kids place them together and the. Explain why they are related- it is great for mastery! Make take teach has some great items!

Candy Corn Matching!
Associations and building students vocabulary is an area that seems to need a lot of work for some.
Today I bought a cool resource that targets what I need the kiddos to learn, but in a fun and different way.You can find it at:
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Candy-Corn-Matching-Vocabulary-909366
It is a fun activity that is used for associations- but it goes just one step farther. Instead of just two pictures it has three. This makes it just a bit more difficult for the students. . I love this new activity that is a little different and more of hands on added Velcro to file folders just make them a little more fun and easier to manage.
Thank you, http://blog.maketaketeach.com/, for making some really great products!
Until next time,
Mindy
