Ways to increase Vocabulary at Home

Your child needs to have a useful vocabulary. Vocabulary is the basis for learning language. Educational research shows that vocabulary strongly relates to reading comprehension, intelligence, and general ability.  That is why vocabulary is so important.

As children learn to read, they must learn to decode (sound-out) print, but they also must have a vocabulary base (word knowledge) to make sense of what they decode.

During the first few years of life, as babies begin to say their first words, it is easy to keep track of their growing vocabularies. Children typically understand or recognize more words than they actually use when speaking. For example, a toddler might only say five different words (e.g., dada, mama, doggie, bottle, more) but be able to understand many others—like pointing to the
light when Mommy asks, “Where is the light?” or beginning to cry when Daddy says, “Bye-bye” as he leaves for work.
Vocabulary development does not stop once a child can talk. In fact, children learn many new words once they start reading and going to school. The chart below shows typical vocabulary development across several ages. Notice how quickly vocabulary grows over the first six years of life.

Vocabulary expectations based on Age (in years)

4 The typical 4-year-old child will have about a 1,500–1,600-word vocabulary.

5 By the time a child reaches school age and heads to kindergarten, he/she will
have between a 2,100- and 2,200-word vocabulary.

6 The 6-year-old child typically has a 2,600-word expressive vocabulary (words
he or she says), and receptive vocabulary (words he or she understands) of
20,000–24,000 words.

12 By the time a child is 12 years old, he/she will understand (have a
receptive vocabulary) of about 50,000 words.

A great way to increase your child's vocabulary is to
  • read to your child
  • talk about the pictures
  • label, and define new words
  • use new words in sentences
  • expose your child to plenty of reading materials
  • talk to your child about what you are doing around the house while you are doing it.

Preschoolers- What to Use?

Category Center

Category Center
Category Center

Category Center

Need something for Preschool? Here is a fun center that you can work on with all preschoolers!

Vocabulary- Categorizing and Labeling

Print off all of the pictures in colour and laminate for durability. For an activity center, have the children place the items from each group on the corresponding mat.
This will help to teach labelling category names and how to categorize items into their different groups.
After the students can put the items from each group on the correct mat, you can have them play a memory game. Place even numbers of cards from each
group (food, clothing, transportation, etc.) and lay them face down on a table. When the student chooses 2 cards that are related, they have to name the group or tell that
the items belong to or explain why the items are related.
For example, a shirt and shoes are both clothing, a car and a motorbike both have wheels. For the last page, you can place 3 items from a group and have the student name the category.
Enjoy!

Category Sort

I bought this Category Sorting Activity from Janelle Publishing
Students can build their vocabulary skills by classifying items, naming categories, choosing items based on function and attributes and sorting. In the pack there are 50 realistic 3-D objects that fit into 10 categories: animals, people, toys, food, things to wear, baby items, vehicles, tools, musical instruments, and eating utensils.
You can also expand their vocabulary skills by describing attributes,  the function of items, their location, or associated objects.
I really like it because, well, all the kids love it! Anytime you have hands on, toys, they are excited! Let's get away from the worksheets, even if just for a bit :)

Here's what I do:

  • I will put things from certain categories in a bin and have them label the category.
  • I will put two things from different groups in the bin and ask what they have in common.
  • You can also talk about why the items are different.
  • I will leave a bin empty and ask them to find 3 things you eat, wear, make music, or animals, etc.
  • put 2 things that are associated and explain why they go together- example: a fish and a boat because they both go in the water.
  • Put all items that are big/small, or a certain color in the bin.
  • then you can also use the little bin for prepositions: put it in the bin, in front, under, behind, beside, etc.

It was $50 from Janelle Publishing but if you don't want to spend the money- go on the hunt for your own items :)

Vocabulary

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Vocabulary-Associations-What-Doesnt-Belong-and-Categorization-578985

Hey Everyone!

One of my favourite goals to work on is vocabulary, especially associations. I made a Vocabulary pack a while back and got to thinking... I would like the kids to be able to take something home to practice their new skills with mom and dad!

In my vocabulary pack I added a black and white booklet that the kids can color, daub, or use bingo chips ( or chipper chats).
I added 6 more pages to my pack.
Take a look and I hope you like it!
I also put it on sale this week for $2!

Great deal!

Cheers,
Mindy

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

http://creatingcommunicators-mindy.blogspot.ca/2016/11/vocabulary.html

http://creatingcommunicators-mindy.blogspot.ca/2016/11/vocabulary.html

When you start looking around there are so many vocabulary resources and that's good because so many kids need to work on their vocabulary skills.

When I go into classrooms, especially for 4 and 5 year old students, the teachers seem to be reading less stories and talking about them even less. Now don't get me wrong, teachers have their own agenda, its called the curriculum. I get it! But what if we just read a book and talked about what happened in the book, what some of the words meant, and described the pictures? It would make things so much easier! Teachers have to teachers letters, letter sounds, math, and on and on ... but if they don't have the foundation of good (or even moderate) vocabulary, these skills aren't going to be utilized correctly!
Instead lets try telling parents, teachers and daycare workers to read a book, talk about the items, how 2 items are related, their functions, where you find them and what category they fit in.

I have some cute activities that you can laminate and use with play-doh. If you're into no prep there are also black and white versions for markers and bingo dabbers. You can find them here and here.

Coloring & Vocabulary Skills

Coloring and Language Skills- Vocabulary

Many times I am working with groups and I spend all of my time managing behaviors. Ugh! So I came up with an idea to use coloring (easy!) to keep those little hands busy.
This pack contains activities that target vocabulary such as associations, what doesn't belong and labeling the category.
I really like this (if I do say so myself) and think I might try this idea and use more speech and language targets.

Quick Vocabulary Activity

http://creatingcommunicators-mindy.blogspot.ca/2016/04/quick-vocabulary-activity.html

Well, here in Alberta, it is back to school from Easter break for most of us! Now if you're feeling like I do, you need something quick and easy to use to help you transition back into work life ( I want to go back to bed!!)

  Vocabulary!
Many children that I work with have trouble sorting and identifying items in categories and I wanted something that I could just grab to target this goal. I wanted something easy that didn't involve a lot of prep but would target many groups and different parts of the vocabulary goal. In speech, I have many students and they have a lot of different goals so I need a lot of materials. I need them to be easy and quick to use because I have a large case load, I work with 7 schools! I also need them to be small and light! I love games, who doesn't, but I can't carry 50 game boards in my bag!~ These activities are small and can be printed and put onto rings, you don't even need to laminate them! :)

This vocabulary product that can be used in speech therapy but it can also be used as a quick activity for teachers. It is designed so that teachers can grab a ring of pictures and get their students to carry out the task quickly. It is a great activity to get students to practice their vocab. while they are in line, getting ready to wash their hands for lunch or anytime their are a few minutes of downtime in the class. Included are: they're all (where the student identifies the category name of the items), categories (where the student identifies items from certain categories), functions, attributes, and associations.

Like my fb page and you leave your email on my facebook page I will email the first 50 people a free copy!! If you want to message me your email instead, you can do that too!
:)

Have a great week! :)

Cheers,
Mindy

What am I?

What am I?

I am sure if you are anything like me, many of the kids you work with have trouble with vocabulary, and especially their functional vocabulary. I made something to help with this... I find that many times the kids have trouble with common vocabulary items and have an even more difficult time describing these items. The first step is to show them how to describe these items so I made this pack. I made it  to help with identifying which item we are talking about by reading the clues and attributes of each item.
The bingo game in this pack is designed for you to read the attributes or a description of what the item is used for and then the student covers up the item on their bingo mat! Hopefully at this point, they will have more skills to describe more items and be able to give important information about what they are talking about.

What am I describing clip cards:

Bingo Mats!

You can use these clip cards as a literacy center or speech therapy for children who are reading (or you can read to them). Make the bingo game more fun by using f
un manipulative like goldfish or gummy bears. The first person with a straight line or black out wins!

Get it while it's free!!!

Working on Vocab... naturally!

Many students (especially ones who are in low socioeconomic schools) are at risk for having low vocabulary skills and  I see many kids who need help targeting their vocabulary skills. Often times they need help naming items from a group, identifying group names, and naming the functions and attributes of items. I have told you before that not only do I do one on one therapy, but I also provide in-class activities. I recently made a pack that can be given to teachers so that they can target this skill while I am unavailable. I made the pack that can work for varying  abilities and the games are made to be more interactive and a natural way to get the vocabulary going.... Included are pictures for younger students and also written/verbal activities that do not include any prompts for students who are older.
These activities are meant to be printed off and cut out for quick and low prep use. You don't even need to laminate if you don't want to!! (Even though I seem to love the laminator!!!)

Classroom Activities to Increase Vocabulary Skills

You can also send this home with your students so that they can try these activities at home or for homework. It makes homework a little more fun and interactive!

Check it out and see if you like it! I would love to hear your feedback!
