Observing, describing and inferring are all critical goals for our older caseload. 

This Observing & Describing product is an excellent way for students grade 4 and up to practice essential skills in reading, observing, comprehending and making inferences. Observing, describing and making inferences are vital skills for all readers. This product teaches this skill in 5 steps: choose words that describe the picture, generate your own describing words, creating descriptive words that are relevant to the picture to make the sentence more descriptive, then describe who, what, where, when and eventually why based on pictures, and then making inferences about pictures.
Step 1- choose from a series of words to best describe the picture.
Step 2- generate their own describing words based on the picture.
Step 3- add adjectives and other describing words to make the sentence (already provided) more interesting and descriptive.
Step 4- describe the pictures using what, where and when, then eventually why. Then they can use their words to create a descriptive sentence that describes the picture.
Step 5- making inferences about pictures. Explaining what happened or will happen based on information from the picture.

 

AAC's For Beginners

There is so much to know with AAC use! And it's even harder to train others....where do you start? 
I needed a simple product that I could give aides on just the basics- like first use it and use it often. Throughout the day- in all ways, always!

I made a quick, very easy to implement and read product to help people who are lost (don't worry we've all been there!)
My first advice is start- and use it just like you would speak (to a baby) only focusing on important words/concepts at a time with no expectation that the child will respond.

Non- Speech Related Items- Elyse

I'm not sure about you but sometimes I get tired of using all the same speech-related items (no offence intended!) I have a large caseload and many of my kids are struggling in their classrooms. I go and look for items that will help them with their academics but also with their communication goals.

The first thing I found were these Comprehension Mats from Proud to Be Primary and I like using them in speech. 

They are great for reading, phonological awareness, comprehension, 'wh' questions, sequencing and also for vocabulary.

They are great because there are many copies/stories, over 25 pages. This product is only $5! What a great price. This is a neat product that you can use with your entire caseload (except pre-k)!
