Mini Books

Mini Books as reinforcement!

I think I've mentioned before that I use a treat bucket as reinforcement for a job well done or completion of a goal/homework! I wanted to find something a little more useful than gum or a cheap little toy that is broke before the kid returns to their classroom! I found these mini books that fit the bill! They are older, I think they were published in the 80's, but they fit the bill. My kids look forward to getting a new book which is great because summer is coming up and kids can practice reading.

The books I have tend to be Robert Munsch but you can use anything you can find! You can also use them for questions and comprehension and ask them about the book on their next speech visit.

You can look for them on amazon or eBay!

Enjoy!!
Cheers,
Mindy

Reading A-Z and Speech

Using books in Speech!

Many kids struggle with reading, specifically reading comprehension.  I wanted to know how I could help my caseload with both skills. I thought about how I could use reading a-z. Reading A-Z is a good resource because many schools use it, is is not too expensive, and it has good books that are leveled! Here are some tips to help you use reading a-z (or any reading program with leveled readers) to help with reading skills and comprehension in speech therapy.

1.  Choose a book from their level and print if off. The great part of this is you can print it in black and white and send the book home, if it gets lost, no worries! It was just paper!!

2. Read the book together!

3. Target some phonological awareness goals from the story. You can ask the beginning sounds of certain words or segment cvc words (depending on their level), blend words from the story and have the child identify what word it is. Here the grade 1`s were circling all the words that started with the /r/ sound. See my tic tac toe game in the background, I used as reinforcement at the end just to spice things up!~

3. Sequence the story using pictures, words or sentences. Have the child relay back to you (or partner) what happened in the story then you can use a sequence the story sheet and work on it together or in groups.
Below are some examples from grades 2-6.

4. Use vocabulary from the story and talk about it. Identify any unknown words and explain them, look them up on the pc, show pictures and, if you want, you can have the students print them out and explain them to other members of the group.

5. Send the book home! Let the student(s) take home their own copy of the book and practice reading it and explaining it to a parent or sibling at home!!
EASY PEASY!!!

If you are a member of this or another level readers program, often they have activities that accompany the book ;)

All of the activities from this post can be found here!~

Reading Comprehension

One of the biggest questions I get from my upper elementary school teachers how can I help with reading comprehension. I made this handout for teachers to give to students to guide them before, during and after reading.
It includes work on schema, characters, setting, problems, resolution, main idea and more!
I have also included some cute bookmarks- there are also color friendly black and white copies too!

It will only be free for a few hours so grab it while its hot!!!
Thanks!

Reading to your children- why?

I found a really great article and it got me thinking about books& reading to kids.
I have heard many teachers talk about the backslide kids have during the summer especially with their literacy skills. In order to keep the reading and language skills going we should read to our kids and the promote a conversation to ensure comprehension.
A few great tips for parents during the summer are:
1. Read everyday. Read anything, it doesn't have to be books; read recipes, poems, signs, and even cereal boxes!
2. Take turns. Have your kids read to you and you to them. I know my kids love it when we read TOGETHER! I  read a page and then they read a page.
3. Ask questions! Many parents make the mistake of asking questions in a testing manner. Ask questions that  promote thinking and not yes/no answers. What do you think will happen next? Why did that happen? Why did you like the story?
4. Make it fun. Turn the book into an activity. Many books have colouring pages and other activities that go with them. When you find colouring pages or activities turn it into a language rich experience. you can sequence the story by asking what was the first thing that happened in the story, the. What happened, and what next, etc. A great website to look at is http://www.kizclub.com/stories.htm for book activities. I also sell book buddies for Brown Bear, Brown Bear, The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, etc.
