Reading Cafe

A Reading Cafe, where reading was on the menu!

In an effort to build bridges between school and home, OPK School conducted a Reading Cafe at their school last week. It offered an opportunity for parents to come and learn about what their children do all day and what they have learned. It is also a great way to get parents involved in school and spend some positive time with their children. They offered the activity throughout the day at different times.

Students as Chefs

The students came out with a tray, ( fully dressed like chefs complete with white coats and chef hats!) and had 3 books on the menu. The parents then chose a book from the tray and then the chef read the books to the parents. After the book and discussion about the book, everyone was able to have a quick treat from the assortment of delicious goodies they had~!

It all looked so cute, they decorated the gym with restaurant tables and cute heart decorations.
I think it was a great way to get parent involvement, and a nice way for students to "show off" their reading skills to the people that love them most, parents!

Great job OPK School!

Community Helper preschool Pack

Community Helper Preschool Pack

Hello!
I will be starting to work with a new group of preschoolers who have severely delayed language skills so I needed a pack, QUICK! I wanted something that would promote free play, build vocabulary, social skills and gross motor skills. I got my butt in gear and made this pack! It is based on community helpers. This pack is specifically designed for preschoolers who have language delays. The purpose is to increase vocabulary and social skills as well as creating a language rich environment in the preschool room. I have activities that do target letters and letter sounds, however, this focus of this pack is not to teach literacy and phonics but to be more of an introduction to literacy and language to kids who have had little exposure. (That is why not all of the letters are included.)

Included is a weekly, step by step plan!

Also, I believe that free play is very important for children. There are a lot of “text” based activities but please allow the children time to play, freely. I do have a few text based activities but I really wanted to focus on natural language exposure and a natural environment.

Here are just a few of the items you can expect!

I have added a few pages for a restaurant center.
Good luck, and enjoy!
Thanks!

SLP Must Have 2018

Ok,Ok! I admit it I haven't been consistent on my SLP Must have's! Life, work, & 3 kids just get in the way! But this year I am trying to keep up with my SLP must have's! My first post for 2018 is a fun vocabulary center. You can use it for group therapy or in the classroom and the best part is you can use it with any student or any level all you do is improvise. The student can name the item, its category, name other items that are associated with it, where you find it, and what its used for.
The best part is its only $1!!

Push-In Therapy

In the speech world, we need to be creative; by meeting the needs of all of our students, empowering and educating teachers, and ever-growing caseloads. As a speechie, I always need to keep learning, growing and changing. I am always trying to think of new, exciting and innovative ways to meet the growing demand of the schools I serve. That's why Creating Communicators provides speech therapy in several different ways.

We provide speech therapy one on one in the "speech room" and we provide small group pull out therapy as well as "push-in therapy." My take on each therapy type is, bring it on. Each style has its own positives and I think that providing all types of services helps ensure that students are receiving support. The more ways that services are offered, the more students can receive adequate support in the way that they need to be supported. Some students need less distractions and need to be out of the class, and other students need support in the class in order to generalize their skills. When you are in the classroom providing activities to the entire class,  push-in therapy, you also have the benefits of peer modeling and their is less stigma associated, since you are working with all the students in the classroom. Plus you are reaching every student, even the kids not on your caseload! :) In some of my schools, I have a caseload of over 50 kids!! And did I mention, I work with 5 schools.

Here are a few examples of my products that can be used for Push-In Therapy!
