Phonemic Awareness

HI Everyone!
So school is really back into the swing of things! My son has homework and my daughter is now getting her home readers. I am a very involved parent with both of my children's classrooms. ( I am sure their teachers get totally sick of me! LOL!) And I am noticing how my daughter's grade 1 teacher is teaching beginning reading. It seems to me that most teachers target reading thru phonics. While phonics does have its place, many teachers forget about phonemic awareness. 
Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate phonemes. Wikipedia defines Phonemic awareness as a subset of phonological awareness in which listeners are able to hear, identify and manipulate phonemes, the smallest units of sound that can differentiate meaning. Separating the spoken word "cat" into three distinct phonemes, /k/, /æ/, and /t/, requires phonemic awareness.
Using activities in your classroom and in therapy that target phonemic awareness can help kids with their reading skills especially the children who are struggling. I have put together some activities that target these areas, they are meant to be fun and functional for kindergarten classrooms. I made them using Velcro to make it easier for storage, and what kid doesn't love Velcro?
